Tour information
This 3-day/2-night mountain sightseeing tour traces the origins of the Japanese people along one of the "Kita Alps Traverse Routes" starting from Takayama, a village in the northern region of the Japan Alps, Chubu-Sangaku National Park, also called the roof of Japan, through a series of villages and mountains to Matsumoto, a village on the other side of the mountains, crossing the 3000m peaks in the back. The tour will take you to the "Kita Alps Traverse Route," a 3-day/2-night mountain sightseeing tour to relive the origins of Japan.
*Include Licensed Guide Interpreter services.
Tour information
- Day 1
After strolling through the historic streets of Takayama, enjoy a guided visit and hands-on experience with traditional crafts. This will offer a deeper understanding of the relationship between Takayama’s people, their culture, and the use of wood in daily life. In the evening, savor Shojin-ryori (traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) at the renowned Kakusho restaurant. Accommodation will be at a private townhouse in the city or a renovated traditional farmhouse in the countryside.
Day 2
Begin the day with a spiritual purification experience at Senko-ji Temple, nestled in the satoyama (rural foothills), before heading to Mount Norikura. You will take part in meditation and a traditional kaji-kito (blessing ritual). After enjoying a bento lunch at the temple, travel by car to Tatamidaira, the highest point accessible by road in Japan. Stay overnight at Hakusanso, a mountain lodge located at Tatamidaira. In the evening, listen to stories about the history of Mount Norikura from the lodge manager, followed by a stargazing walk under the night sky.
Day 3
Before dawn, if the weather is favorable, take a sunrise hike. Continue to the summit of Kengamine on Mount Norikura, with opportunities along the way to observe the elusive raicho (rock ptarmigan). In the afternoon, descend from Tatamidaira to Matsumoto by car, stopping at Azusa Suijin Shrine, which honors the sacred waters of Norikura.
Afterward, visit a local sake brewery and learn about sake-making that uses water sourced from the Northern Alps, offering a deeper appreciation of the connection between people and nature in Matsumoto.
The journey concludes with a visit to Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most beautiful original castles. The tour ends at Matsumoto Station.
